Ko wai mātou? Who Are We?

Onepoto School opened in 1961. Our school name Onepoto means short beach, . Through our Cultural Narrative we discovered that Onepoto carries with it great mana; a history of cultural exchanges and decision making.

Our very location on a volcanic basin, suggests the stronghold we have to the whenua, it also continues to offer new beginnings to those seeking a new home, as it has done for many years. It nurtures us and adds richness to our school local curriculum. The Awataha stream, is the waterway that runs beside our school, it nourishes and grows the land, it’s people and Onepoto School. It honours the people who have come before, who are current and who are yet to come.

When you enter the doors of our school you are warmly welcomed. We are known to have a very positive ‘whanau feeling’ about our school that is inclusive and nurturing to all. We value our people, Tangata Whenua,  and believe that our children achieve when they are cared for and nurtured by supportive whanau, the school, and their community. We work hard to develop Whanaungatanga and connections in this way, in the best interests of our students. We are proud to host the biggest cultural festival on the North Shore and in Auckland, in Term 4 each year.

Our school Board have positive roles in the school’s current and future direction. They support school leaders to provide the best learning environment for students to be the best they can be.
