Flax weaving

We learnt how to weave a flax leaf into a koru.

First fold leaf in half lengthwise and remove hard centre

Then soften by scraping

Then split the flax into 4 even strips

With shiny side up take 1st strip and fold over 2nd strip

Then take 4th strip and fold under 3rd strip and over 2nd strip

Repeat this keeping the strips tight and the flax will curl.

When finished weaving, tie and wind the curls into a koru.

We also wove Anzac poppies from flax and  paper.

We found the poppies hard to do. Mrs Coker put pohutukawa buds in the middle and we painted them black.
